What is Pilates?
Pilates is a very gentle form of exercise that focuses on the core muscles that support the back and pelvis, helping you to maintain good posture. These muscles are important in preventing and managing back pain, including sciatica and Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP)-previously known as symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD). Pilates also involves stretching exercises, breathing control, relaxation and awareness of the pelvic floor muscles that support the bladder.
What are the benefits?
Research so far has shown that exercise in pregnancy and the postnatal period can promote a more positive recovery with increased social support; maintain fitness, flexibility and a healthy weight; improve body image, self confidence, circulation, breathing control and awareness.
